In Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) there is increase in insulin resistance and decrease in insulin release resulting in increased blood glucose. Symptoms include increased thirst and urination, constant hunger, weight loss, blurred vision, and extreme fatigue. Globally, an estimated 500 million people have diabetes. More common in adults, T2DM increasingly affects children as childhood obesity increases. If T2DM is unmanaged, it is life threatening. Some T2DM patients can manage target blood glucose levels with diet and exercise alone, but many also need diabetes medications or insulin therapy.
